Special Equity Issue: JRME

The Journal for Research in Mathematics Education (JRME) is seeking innovative ways to promote and support research that has the potential to encourage and sustain conversations at the intersection between research and practice. As such, the journal is piloting online special issues of JRME that will address topics of key importance and considered to be at the research/practice boundary.  The special issue will be accessible to all NCTM members online and become an NCTM publication upon completion.

In line with the NCTM Board of Directors' identification of "equity" as a new strategic priority, the first issue will focus on Equity in Mathematics Education. The issue is projected to contain 8 to 12 articles, with the first articles to be released online in April 2009.

The editorial panel also looks to extend the reach through online chats or discussions with authors.  This practice will provide opportunities for discussions of equity in mathematics education across roles and context and will enable members to have conversations at the intersection of research and practice.

The online publication will seek to generate interest, dialogue, and impact by:

  • including up to 12 articles that begin to capture the vast geography of equity issues in mathematics education
  • welcoming a diverse body of contributors
  • staggering publication over a two-year period, enabling a more sustained dialogue
  • offering online chats or discussions with authors so that all NCTM members can maximize dialogue and opportunity for professional growth

The editorial panel includes Rochelle Gutiérrez (chair), Beatriz D'Ambrosio, Marilyn Frankenstein, Signe Kastberg, Danny Martin, Judit Moschkovich, Edd Taylor and David Barnes (staff liaison). Once launched, the Editorial Panel looks to extend the reach through online chats or discussions with authors. This practice will provide opportunities for discussions of equity in mathematics education across roles and context and will enable members to have conversations at the intersection of research and practice.

The Equity special issue will use a separate open-review process, as opposed to a double-blind review process. The open-review process will allow authors and reviewers to be identified to one another in an effort to use reviewer-author dialogue to support collegial interaction and the development of richer publications.

Manuscripts should follow JRME submission guidelines and conform to the conventions specified in the Publication Manual of the American Psychological Association, 5th ed.
