The Editorial Panels of the journals listed below welcome manuscripts for
consideration for publication. However, materials that have been published
elsewhere or are being considered for publication by journals other than NCTM-affiliated
group publications should not be submitted. Teaching Children Mathematics serves
grades Pre-K–6, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School serves
grades 5-9, and the Mathematics Teacher serves grades 8–14. On-Math serves
grades Pre K-14 and publishes articles that utilize the electronic media.
As of September 1, 2005, all manuscripts must be submitted
electronically to one of the sites listed below. An electronic
acknowledgment will be sent upon receipt of a manuscript.

Preparation of Manuscripts
l. Leave margins of about 4 cm on the sides and at the
top and bottom of each page.
2. Use double spacing for all material, including quoted
matter, lists, tables, notes, references, and bibliographies.
Manuscripts should not exceed ten pages of text, not including
tables and figures.
3. Indicate a paragraph by indenting the first line rather
than by including an extra space between paragraphs.
4. Provide accurate and complete bibliographical information.
All references cited in the manuscript should be listed
at the end of the manuscript. See recent issues for style.
See the Chicago Manual of Style, 15th ed. (Chicago:
University of Chicago Press, 2003) for additional details.
5. Put the title and name(s) of author(s) on a separate
cover sheet. Have no author identification appearing in
the manuscript. Do not reference your own work in a way
that compromises the blind review process.
6. Please use a spell checker before submitting your manuscript
and re-check it for grammar, completeness, spelling of
all proper names, and full identification of all organizations
and groups named by initials or acronyms.
7. See the calls for manuscripts in recent issues of the Mathematics
Teacher, Mathematics Teaching in the Middle School,
and Teaching Children Mathematics for information
on the latest priorities for articles.
8. After a manuscript has been accepted, the Reston office
will work with authors to obtain photographs to accompany
the article when appropriate.
Preparation
of Drawings
Figures
and tables should be numbered and may appear where
appropriate in the text. Refer to them by number; “see
figure 1”, for example. Please include captions for
all figures. Rough drawings of figures are acceptable;
the journals have artists who will prepare the art and
place it, so statements such as "insert figure 3 about
here" are unnecessary. It is important, however,
that you make your art intentions clear. For example,
if the relationship between two specific parts of a drawing
is important, please make a note of that relationship.
Student
Work or Photographs
Photographs and student work are to be submitted electronically along with the manuscript. Parental permission must be obtained by the author if a photograph clearly shows the student's face, or if the student's full name appears anywhere in the article or on student work samples. The author must also obtain permission from any photographer whose work is submitted with the manuscript.

Quotations and Reproductions
If quotations are used, copy them exactly. Do not change
any words or punctuation. Mark each omission by ellipsis
points and put each interpolation in brackets. Indicate
the author's italics by underscoring the words. If you
want to add italics yourself, add "(italics added)" or "(italics
mine)."
The source of every quotation should be given in full.
Likewise, credit should be given for photographs and drawings.
Permission must be obtained to quote copyrighted material
and to reproduce copyrighted pictures or illustrations.
Ordinarily, it is not necessary to obtain permission to
quote a passage of less than 100 words from a long prose
article or book; but permission is needed for more than
a single line of poetry and for more than 25 words of a short
prose composition. It is the author's responsibility to
obtain the appropriate written permission for the use of
any copyrighted material in his or her manuscript.
Processing of Manuscripts
All manuscripts submitted to the journals are circulated
to field referees, without author identification, for recommendations
regarding publication of the materials. The final decision
is reached by the Editorial Panel and conveyed to the author.
This review process takes approximately four months; authors
may check the status of a manuscript by visiting the appropriate
site whose URL is given below. In addition, articles accepted
for publication are copyedited by the NCTM journals staff
for readability. An author of a feature article will receive
up to five complimentary copies of the journal in which
his or her article appears. Authors are not paid for their
contributions. As a condition for publication, authors
are required to transfer their copyright to NCTM.
